This is what emerges in the Tech Cities 2022 report promoted by Experis, the ManpowerGroup company, on the most requested technology profiles in the main Italian cities. As explained by Jose Manuel Mas, director of Experis Italia, “the pandemic has accelerated the digitalization processes in a sudden and unexpected way, pushing a large part of the world population to relate, live and work through digital. The most searched profiles have now become Cloud Developer, Full Stack Developer, Data Scientist, Java Developer, Cyber ​​Security and DevOps Engineer. “Faced with the new challenges posed by this renewed digital context, companies and workers need to be prepared, investing in training, and updating and integrating both technical skills and transversal skills, without forgetting the necessary strengthening of the Cyber ​​area. Milan, according to the research by Experis, is the most tech city in Italy, and totals 42% of active searches, followed by Rome (25%), Turin (10%), Naples (8%), Bologna (7% ), Padua (5%) and Bari (3%). Milan is also the province with the highest average salary, or an average of 43,000 euros, ranging from an average of 40,000 euros for Java and Full Stack Developers, up to an average of 50,000 euros for Cloud Architects. The provinces of Turin follow with an average salary of 39,000 euros, characterized by requests from SMEs and consulting firms, and Rome, with employment sectors linked to Public Administration, Defense and consulting firms. The province of Padua offers an average salary of 37,000 euros and greater opportunities in the production and industrial fields both in companies and in consulting firms. In the province of Bologna there is an average RAL of 37,000 euros for IT professionals, with a greater demand in product companies and software houses, as well as interesting opportunities in the banking and insurance sectors. The provinces of Naples close the ranking, with an average RAL of around 33,000 euros, where the Naples business center (CDN) hosts many consulting companies and software houses, and Bari, which has a growing demand for IT profiles in industrial and consulting sector, thanks to the birth of many start-ups.

How much do tech workers earn

According to Experis research, these are profiles with medium-high salaries. The first emerging profile is that of the Cloud Developer, a figure who builds the architecture of the cloud keeping in mind the needs and characteristics of the reality to which it is intended, monitors the results and also takes care of the management phases. The junior Cloud Developer has a salary between 25-30,000 euros and can reach wages of 60,000 euros for Architect figures. The average Italian gross salary is equal to 43,000 euros and is the highest of all IT figures. The Full Stack Developer, that is the professional able to adapt to the different phases of a development plan and who has the ability to manage and coordinate a project in a global way, has an average RAL of 35,000 euros. the Data field (Data Scientist, Data Architect, Big Data Specialist), that is, figures who deal with analyzing and organizing large amounts of data, extracting the most efficient paradigms and exposing them in an understandable form even to non-experts. The average RAL is 35,000 euros. A figure that continues to be in great demand is that of the Java Developer, or a professional specialized in programming in Java, one of the most popular programming languages ​​in the world, who has an average RAL of 34,000 euros. Other emerging profiles are those of the Cyber ​​Security Consultant, Penetration tester, Ethical Hacker. These professionals are specialized in preventing, recognizing and reacting against cyber attacks and have an average RAL of 40,000 euros. Finally, among the most sought-after figures is the DevOps Engineer who acts as a “link” between different departments, making sure that the work proceeds in full synergy and complementarity. The RAL is heavily influenced by seniority and on average is around € 37,000.

Flexibility leverages to attract and retain tech workers

Beyond the remuneration, to attract tech workers, however, the most important lever seems to be flexibility, together with training and skills development plans. According to the study, to be attractive, companies must in fact overcome their prejudices towards remote work. From the Experis survey, as many as 39% of employers require their IT teams to always work in presence, while of the 57% who said they were inclined to grant remote working, only 9% plan to grant it 100%. A propensity that limits its attractiveness, especially towards IT figures, who record high mobility and have an average time spent in the company of just over a year.
