Ineos Automotive presented its new 4×4 Fusilier vehicle in London. This was done by the brand’s CEO himself, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who confirmed that, in addition to the electric engine already announced previously, a low-emission variant with an electric engine with extended range is currently being developed. The Ineos Fusilier will thus be able to better satisfy the requests of its potential buyers as well as guaranteeing its decarbonisation.

Details of the new engine will be announced in the autumn

The extended range option consists of a small petrol engine that powers a generator to best preserve the battery charge level when no external power source is available nearby. Confirmation of the details of the second unit and the timing of the introduction will be revealed later, not before autumn 2024, but as of now it is expected that they can satisfy a rather interesting management of the vehicle.

Electrification requires a mix of propulsion technologies

Sir Jim Ratcliffe presented it thus. “While we were developing this new vehicle we said to ourselves that to move towards electrification, but also to continue producing cars that can be driven in the best possible way, a mix of propulsion technologies was needed. BEVs are perfect in situations such as short journeys and delivery services in urban centres, but to help accelerate the change the new Fusilier also needed to have an alternative type engine”.

Manufactured by Magna in the Graz factory in Austria

Developed in collaboration with Magna who will produce the vehicle in the Graz plant in Austria, the new Fusilier is based on the DNA of the Grenadier, to which it adds a more modern approach and a distinctive identity, the new 4X4 will be slightly shorter as well as a little lower. It will also be produced on a special skateboard platform combined with a mix of technical solutions: the top hat structure, the steel underbody and aluminum doors and closures.

The final development of the new Fusilier on Mount Schöckl

Ineos has already collaborated with Magna on the development of the Grenadier Station Wagon and the Quartermaster pick-up. As one of the world‘s largest independent automotive suppliers and manufacturers, Magna produces a variety of conventional internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles for various automakers. That’s why a considerable part of the development of the new Ineos Fusilier will also include a rigorous testing program on Mount Schöckl, which is close to Magna’s complete vehicle assembly plant in Graz, Austria.
