EMPLOYMENT: ISTAT, EMPLOYMENT IS GROWING AGAIN IN FEBRUARY, +351 THOUSAND EQUAL TO 23.77 MLN PEOPLE

In February 2024, after the decline recorded in January, employment begins to grow again due to the increase in permanent employees which reaches 15 million 969 thousand. The number of employed people – equal to 23 million 773 thousand – is higher than that of February 2023 by 351 thousand units, as a synthesis of the increase of 603 thousand permanent employees and the decrease of 200 thousand fixed-term employees and 53 thousand self-employed workers. This is what Istat finds.

And in any case compared to the previous month, the employed and unemployed increased, while the inactive decreased. Employment grows (+0.2%, equal to +41 thousand units) among men, those aged over 24 and permanent employees; however, it declines among women, 15-24 year olds, temporary employees and the self-employed. The employment rate rose to 61.9% (+0.1 points). The increase in the number of people looking for work (+2.5%, equal to +46 thousand units) affects both genders and every age group.

The decrease in the number of inactive people (-0.5%, equal to -65 thousand units, between 15 and 64 years old) is observed for both men and women and all age groups, with the exception of 15-24 year olds among which inactivity grows. The inactivity rate drops to 33.0% (-0.2 points). Compared to February 2023, both the number of people looking for work (-3.2%, equal to -63 thousand units) and the number of inactive people between 15 and 64 years old (-1.9%, equal to -239 thousand) fell. .

Comparing the quarter December 2023-February 2024 with the previous one (September-November 2023), there was an increase in the employment level of 0.3%, for a total of 65 thousand employed. The growth in employment, observed in the quarterly comparison, is associated with the decrease in people looking for work (-3.3%, equal to -65 thousand units) and the increase in the inactive (+0.3%, equal to + 41 thousand units).

In February 2024, the total unemployment rate rises to 7.5% (+0.2 points), the youth unemployment rate rises to 22.8% (+0.7 points), the employment rate rises to 61.9%, while the inactivity rate drops to 33.0%. ISTAT reports this.
