Fewer and fewer couples are having children in Italy. As Istat reveals, our country still records a negative record for the birth rate.
In 2020, 404,892 were born (-15,000 on 2019). The decline (-2.5% in the first 10 months of the year) was accentuated in November (-8.3% compared to the same month of 2019) and December (-10.7%), months in which count the births conceived at the beginning of the epidemic wave.
The birth rate continues in 2021. According to the provisional data of January-September, there are already 12,000 500 minor births, almost double the number observed in the same period of 2020. The average number of children per woman falls in 2020 to 1.24 for the total of residents, from 1.44 in the years 2008-2010, years of relative maximum fertility.
