Italy: retail sales up in June, non-food goods recovering

The trend in consumption in Italy is improving. According to data released today by Istat, in June retail sales increased by 0.7% compared to the previous month, thanks to the increase in both food sales (+ 1.1% in value and volume) and those of non-food goods (+ 0.3% in value and volume).

On a trend basis, retail sales were up 7.7%. Also in this case the positive trend is particularly strong for sales of non-food goods (+ 11.9%), more moderate for foodstuffs (+ 2.5%). Compared to June 2020, the value of retail sales improved in all distribution channels: large-scale distribution (+ 3.3%), businesses operating on small surfaces (+ 10.9%), sales outside the shops (+ 4.2%) and e-commerce (+ 23.7%).
