Kenya has agreed a $138.7 million loan from France to modernize the five-line Nairobi Commuter Railway. The agreement, the Railjournal website reports today, was signed on 6 April during a visit to the Kenyan capital by Stéphane Séjourné, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Late last year, work began on a new $7.76 million 12.5km meter gauge line in western Nairobi, linking Riruta with Ngong. Once completed, Nairobi’s commuter network will total 165km.
