There are many pieces that stimulated my creativity and that I enjoyed drawing, also because the design times are longer than those of fashion, and this allows you to turn around ideas and “play with them”. I’m not a drinker, but I love the idea of the bar cabinet, which reminds me of art deco refinements, a certain elegant hedonism. Over the years I have designed a few, and in this latest collection I have imagined one called Royal, shining with its curved profiles and gold surfaces, made with meticulous craftsmanship. Elements like this represent me, because they combine tradition and modernity in the sign of careful manual work.
Are there some that you are most fond of?
The Logo Lamp, which I designed in 1982, almost two decades before I launched Armani / Casa. It is a lamp with a geometric profile, vaguely exotic, which I consider the first expression of curiosity and ambition to extend my aesthetic to other areas. He was the forerunner of the Armani style in the world of interior design. I am fond of it precisely because it is a pioneering piece, perfect in its timeless modernity, emblematic of the key elements of my design philosophy.
In addition to the creative one, has there been, in your experience, an osmosis of know-how between fashion and design?
Absolutely yes: every day, in fashion as in design, I meet exceptional artisans. In Italy we have an incredible heritage of craftsmanship: whether it is bending the wood in a certain way or making a special textile weave. I like to explore this world and discover, sometimes rediscover, bringing them back to light, wonderful workmanship. Challenges are the goad to do better and offer unique luxury products.
