McDonald’s is experiencing an outage of its IT system in several parts of Asia-Pacific: the “blackout” has prevented customers from ordering food from do-it-yourself electronic kiosks and mobile phone apps.

Orders only at the counter

A technological glitch caused the problem and customers are being asked to order by staff at store counters, the fast food giant said in a statement on its Hong Kong website on Friday.

A company spokesperson in Japan said he was unsure how long the problem will last, while restaurants in Taiwan have suspended telephone and online orders due to system maintenance.

Duration unknown

According to media reports, the issue is spreading further across the region. The Hong Kong Economic Times said operations in parts of mainland China had also been affected, and “McDonald’s has collapsed” had become one of the top trending topics on social media platform Weibo.
