Mexico Sets Record for Automotive Exports in 2023

In a recent conference, Odracir Barquera, General Director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), announced that Mexico exported a record-breaking 3,300,876 automobiles by the end of 2023. This level of exports has not been reached since 2011, marking a significant milestone for the country’s automotive industry.

Barquera highlighted that SUVs and Pick Ups were the top segments that covered almost 81.5% of Mexico’s automotive exports in 2023. Specifically, 54.4% of the units exported were SUVs, while 27.1% were pickups. The remaining 18.5% included compact cars, luxury cars, and subcompact cars.

The figures presented by the AMIA revealed that the number of cars sent from Mexico abroad increased by 15.19% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Mexico’s automotive production levels experienced a growth of 14.23% in 2023, with the manufacture of 3 million 779,234 units.

Barquera attributed the positive results to the growth of sales in the United States market, the primary destination of car shipments from Mexico. The consumption of automotive products in the United States rose by almost 8% last year, contributing to the success of Mexico’s automotive industry.

Looking ahead to 2024, Barquera expressed positive expectations for the industry. He anticipates a significant increase in car production, particularly in the electric sector, with the addition of a third model to the two already manufactured by Ford and Chevrolet in the country.

The outlook for Mexico’s automotive industry in 2024 appears promising, and stakeholders are eagerly anticipating the continued growth and success of the sector.
