(CNN) — For the second month in a row, Mexican-made beer Modelo Especial has become the best-selling beer in the United States, dethroning long-time leader Bud Light.
According to data provided to consultancy Bump Williams by NIQ, Modelo Especial accounted for 8.7% of total beer sales in the four weeks ending July 1, compared to Bud Light’s 7%. Additionally, while Bud Light experienced a decline of 28.5% in dollar sales leading up to July 4, Modelo showcased an 8.5% growth during the same period.
Bud Light initially lost its position last month, which it had held for two decades. The beer has been grappling with challenges following the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, during which he sent a personalized can of Bud Light to a transgender influencer, sparking negative attention and hate from right-wing media and anti-trans commentators on social media. Anheuser-Busch’s response to the incident also received criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates.
In an attempt to boost sales, Bud Light launched a new marketing campaign centered around country music and NFL players in June. Additionally, the company started advertising campaigns targeting farmers, delivery men, and waiters, some of whom have faced threats following the transphobic backlash.
Despite the recent setbacks, Bud Light continues to hold the title of the country’s best-selling beer for this year, accounting for an 8.7% share of the market. However, Modelo, gradually closing the gap, currently holds an 8.1% share, according to Bump Williams.
Constellation Brands, the New York-based parent company of Modelo, recently announced strong results. Its brewing business, which also includes Corona, witnessed an 11% increase in sales during the first quarter.
Greg Gallagher, Vice President of Brand Marketing at Constellation, highlighted Modelo’s impressive success in recent years, expressing the company’s desire to replicate its dominance among the broader Hispanic drinker demographic. Gallagher stated, “Our growth is about keeping that core, but also attracting non-Hispanic customers, and we’re having incredible success.”
