Nona Mikhelidze wins the Viareggio-Rèpaci Journalism Award

Nona Mikhelidze was awarded in the 94th edition of the Viareggio-Rèpaci Award with the Journalist Award, in recognition of his contribution to the public debate on the Russian war on Ukraine. The awarding of the Prizes will take place on 30 July in Viareggio. The Prize was established in 2007 as a journalistic prize “viareggioterzapagina – Cesare Garboli” to open the Viareggio Rèpaci Literary Prize to communication through new technologies and at the same time to broaden the field of action to Europe, hitherto limited to the national sphere .

“I feel deeply honored to have been awarded the Viareggio-Journalist Literary Award 2023. Over the course of this year, I have tried hard to contribute to the debate regarding the Russian war against Ukraine. Therefore, I wish to dedicate this recognition to the outstanding military and civic resilience of the Ukrainian people, as well as to the memory of the writer Victoria Amelina and to all those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom and for Europe”, said Nona Mikhelidze.

On July 2, the writer and poet Viktorija Amelina died in a Russian attack on a restaurant in Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine. Amelina was engaged in countering Russian propaganda through field research of Moscow’s war crimes. The writer is one of thirteen civilian deaths confirmed in a Russian attack on civilian targets
