A customer in Medellín was shocked when they received a bill of 160,000 pesos for a gratin arepa at a restaurant in the city. The incident sparked outrage on social media as the bill also included exorbitant prices for other items such as a shot of whiskey cream for 90,000 pesos and chicken fingers for over 140,000 pesos.
The restaurant, Hookah, located in Parque Lleras, defended their pricing by stating that all prices are clearly listed on the menu and there was no deception involved. The manager, Alejandro Cristalino, emphasized that the arepa in question is meant to serve two or three people due to the quality and quantity of ingredients used.
Despite the explanation from the restaurant, many internet users found the prices to be “absurd” and “ridiculous,” with some even comparing the incident to similar cases in other cities like Cartagena and Santa Marta. The initial post on social media about the incident went viral before being deleted by the user who shared it.
While the customer did not make an official statement about the incident, the controversy surrounding the high-priced arepa has sparked a debate about transparency in pricing at restaurants. Ultimately, whether the prices were justified or not, this incident serves as a reminder for customers to always check prices before ordering in order to avoid any surprises when the bill arrives.
