Spare time

Brussel –

Employees who plan their vacation days sensibly in May can enjoy a lot of free time. In May, 10 vacation days are enough for 21 days off, including weekends.

The HR services company Liantis calculated that employees who plan their vacation days efficiently in May have two long free periods. This is a result of the various official holidays in May: the Feast of Labor on May 1, Our Lord’s Assumption on May 9 and Pentecost Monday on May 20.

HR service provider Liantis calculated that anyone who takes six vacation days in the period from May 1 to May 9, namely on May 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10, will have twelve days off in a row, of course including the weekend. In some companies it was decided to replace the national holiday, which falls on a Sunday this year, with Friday, May 10. In that case, five vacation days are sufficient for twelve days off in a row.

A second long free period follows after Pentecost Monday. Anyone who takes time off on May 21, 22, 23 and 24 will have nine days of holiday, again including the two weekends. In total, ten, and in some cases even nine, vacation days result in 21 days of free time. Employers will probably draw up a schedule so that the company does not come to a complete standstill in May.

Liantis adds that employees who become ill during their vacation can compensate for those days later. “If an employee becomes ill or has an accident during vacation, he or she must always provide the employer with a medical certificate within three working days, unless otherwise specified,” explains Mathias Debruyckere of Liantis. “In addition, the employee must always inform the employer of the address of residence if this is not the home address.” (gc)
