After a long negotiation, the OK from the competent authorities of Beijing has arrived for the import of our risotto varieties, true excellence of Made in Italy agri-food. Italy is currently the leading producer in the European Union, ensuring over 50% of the production of rice, which differs from that grown in the rest of the world thanks to typical varieties, enhanced thanks to the DOP and IGP brands that recognize the specificity of the territories of origin. With 228 thousand cultivated hectares (+ 4% in 2020) and 4 thousand companies that harvest 1 million tons of processed rice, there are more than 200 varieties: from Carnaroli, the “king of rice”, to Arborio and Vialone Nano, first IGP rice, passing through Rome and Baldo. Currently 60% of Italian rice is destined for export, especially to Germany and England. The agreement crowns a long diplomatic and technical negotiation conducted together with the business world of the sector.
