Russians love South Africa, a favorite destination for Russian tourism on the continent. The Russian ambassador in Pretoria, Ilya Rogachev, told Ria Novosti.
“The Republic of South Africa, with its unique nature, favorable climate and a number of other advantages, remains a center of attraction for Russian tourists. At the end of 2023, South Africa became the most popular destination for Russians in sub-Saharan Africa” with more than 28,000 Russian citizens visiting the southern African country, “that’s 75% more than in 2022. Cape Town it remains the most attractive tourist destination for them,” said Rogachev.
The ambassador also underlined that the main limiting factors for flights to South Africa are the lack of direct non-stop flights and sanctions, which make it impossible to pay for goods and services with Russian bank cards (which adopt the Mir payment system , which South Africa does not yet have).
