Tanzania: first pavilion at the Venice Biennale

by admin

Tanzania will participate this year, for the first time in its history, in the 2024 Venice Art Biennale, from 20 April to 24 November. The Tanzanian embassy in Italy announced this in a press release.

The African country will be present at the Biennale with a national pavilion hosted in the Factory of Seeing ā€“ Carlo Montanaro Archive in Venice, Calle del Forno, ā€œa magical and emblematic place for the works on displayā€ reports the embassy. The artists who will be present are Happy Robert, Naby, Haji Chilonga and Lute Mwakisopile.

The project was realized thanks to the commitment of the Embassy of Tanzania in Italy, in particular of Ambassador Mahmoud Kombo, whose staff welcomed the proposal of the Italian collective ā€œUltimi futuristiā€, in collaboration with Cefa Ets, an NGO based in Bologna which for 50 years has been helping the poorest communities in the world to achieve food self-sufficiency and respect for fundamental rights. This is ā€œan important milestone for the countryā€™s artistic scene and offers the opportunity to share its culture and creativity with an international audienceā€.

The curator of the Pavilion will be Enrico Bittoto, an expert in modern art, historical avant-garde and sociologist, curator of various publications on the topic and of private archives of and on the twentieth century. The pavilion will be built thanks to the support of various companies and private entities and part of the proceeds will be allocated to a cooperation project that Cefa promotes to improve the income and nutritional intake of over 22,000 small tea farmers in southern Tanzania.
