(CNN) — As the world grapples with a global energy crisis, the potential for onshore wind farms to help meet energy needs is becoming increasingly apparent. Larger wind turbines are capable of producing more energy than standard ones, but their components are often too large to be transported by road.

In response to this challenge, a Colorado-based energy startup called Radia has developed a groundbreaking solution. They are working on creating the largest airplane in aviation history, known as the WindRunner plane. This innovative aircraft’s mission will be to transport giant 90-meter-long blades directly to wind farms.

To support the world‘s decarbonization goals, the WindRunner will utilize sustainable aviation fuel and only require a dirt or gravel runway for landing. Operating from regional hubs, Radia plans for the aircraft to deliver its cargo where needed, boasting the ability to land on runways as short as 1,800 meters, a feat unmatched by any other large commercial aircraft.

When it comes to specifications, the WindRunner will have a cargo volume of 7,700 cubic meters, equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools. It will be 108 meters in length, making it 38 meters longer than a Boeing 747-400, with a wingspan of 80 meters. This aircraft’s scale is truly revolutionary, aiming to revolutionize the transportation of oversized payloads.

Radia’s focus on utilizing existing technology and proven aviation materials aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of the WindRunner fleet. The company plans to adhere to industry standards, with potential commercial operations slated to begin in 2027, though no official timeline has been confirmed.

With up to $10 trillion expected to be invested in onshore wind energy by 2050, Radia’s development of the WindRunner aircraft could play a crucial role in producing GigaWind turbines.
