Toyota Launches Production of New Utility Vehicle in Argentina

Japanese automaker Toyota has officially begun production of a new utility model in Zárate, Argentina. The new vehicle was developed on the chassis of the company’s popular Hilux pick-up. The start of production marks a significant milestone for Toyota in Argentina, as the country has been assembling the Hilux for over 20 years and is also the number one seller in its segment.

The new model, classified as a medium van, is sold globally under the name Hiace and is known for its outstanding participation and acceptance by users in the last-mile delivery sector. The production of the Hiace was made possible through the construction of a new 8,000 m2 industrial warehouse in Zárate, representing a total investment of nearly $50 million.

The Hiace, which has been sold as an imported model from Japan, is now produced in Argentina in versions such as Commuter for passengers and Van L2H2. The production line is the third at the Zárate industrial property, joining the pick-up Hilux and the SUV SW4.

The “made in Argentina” Hiace shares components with the Hilux, including the engine, transmission, and rear drive axle. It is equipped with a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 177 CV and a six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Hiace is available in two versions, including a fully glazed Commuter option with capacity for 13 passengers and the L2H2 Van version, which offers a larger cargo volume. Both versions come with raised chassis, rear-wheel drive, sliding side doors, and a liftgate.

The models produced in Argentina also come with multimedia improvements, including a new 9” center and reversing camera in the Van versions. The passenger version incorporates a 360° vision for greater security.

The suggested price for the Hiace in Argentina is 40,394,000 pesos (about 37,000 dollars) for the L2H2 version and 48,835,000 pesos (45,000 dollars) for the Commuter. Toyota aims to establish a long-term sustainable business model for the Hiace, with plans to increase the local integration of auto parts and consolidate export markets.
