Travaglia (Nestlé): less than 30% of our products are unhealthy

“We will continue to try to improve where possible the fat and sugar content of our products, but on some of these there are objective difficulties that we and the other companies that produce them have”. The CEO and president of Nestlé Italia, Marco Travaglia, returns to the article in the Financial Times at the end of May which gave an internal document to the multinational according to which over 60% of its products are unhealthy: ” has left us disconcerted, because information has been extrapolated and reported in such a way: the study in question concerned only Australia and the data left out 50% of our proto-sheet ».

Nestlé, however, also admits that a third of its products actually do not score high in terms of healthiness: “Foods such as bars, or chocolate are among them – recalls Travaglia – but the share of these products is less than 30 %. In the last ten years we have reduced the sugar and salt content respectively by 14 and 17% “, but it is clear that there are products for which the consumer must make an informed consumption”.

In 2020, the Nestlé group generated over 4 billion euros of shared value in Italy: “We believe it is an important contribution to the country’s economic development,” said Travaglia. In particular, the 4 billion euro of shared value is made up of 757 million euro of direct fallout, 2,054 million euro of indirect fallout and 1,198 of induced fallout. Regarding the impact of the group on employment, the multinational calculates that for each employee who works in one of the 10 Nestlé offices, 12 jobs are generated indirectly or induced, for a total of 64,663 employees.
