In view of ongoing Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev, Mayor Vitali Klitschko has called for further international support for air defense. “We have a deficit in air defense systems,” he told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Monday edition). In order to avoid damage caused by falling debris, the radius must be expanded. It should be possible to shoot down drones and missiles on their way to the capital.
According to Klitschko, more than 800 buildings have already been damaged and destroyed in air strikes on Kiev in the war that has lasted more than two years, including almost 440 residential buildings. In addition, more than 200 people were killed. Last year, air alarms were sounded more than 800 times in Kiev, he said.
Klitschko emphasized in the Funke newspapers that he was grateful to Germany for the Iris-T system, which worked very well. But it’s not just about Kiev, “our citizens in Odessa, Dnipro and Kharkiv also need good protection.” In mid-April, the federal government promised Ukraine the delivery of a third Patriot air defense system. This is used to combat larger airborne targets such as aircraft, drones, rockets and cruise missiles.
