Walmart to Reduce Self-Checkout Options in Certain Locations in 2023

In recent news, Walmart has announced changes to its self-checkout technology at select locations across the United States. While the self-checkout option has been popular among millions of customers, there have also been conflicts and challenges associated with it.

After carefully considering feedback from both customers and employees, Walmart has decided to reduce or modify self-checkout processes at certain stores. This decision is in line with similar actions taken by chains such as Target and Dollar General.

Specifically, Walmart will be implementing changes at stores in Shrewsbury, Missouri and Cleveland, where payment will be encouraged at manned checkout lines. The company believes that this shift will improve the overall shopping experience for customers and allow associates to provide more personalized and efficient service.

Last year, Walmart eliminated self-checkout at three stores in New Mexico, based on purchasing behavior and business needs. The company spokesperson confirmed that there are no additional closures announced at this time.

In addition to Walmart, other retailers like Target and Dollar General have also made adjustments to their self-checkout processes. Target has capped the number of items for self-checkout lanes and requested increased oversight from store managers, while Dollar General has reduced and removed self-checkout stations in certain locations.

Moving forward, Walmart will allow each store to determine the number of self-checkout registers needed based on their individual requirements. This flexible approach aims to meet the needs of both customers and employees while ensuring a positive shopping experience.
