A European court upholds Italy’s right to claim a bronze sculpture from the Getty Museum

ROME (AP) — A European court on Thursday upheld Italy’s right to confiscate a valuable Greek sculpture from the J. Paul Getty Museum in California, rejecting the museum’s appeal and concluding that Italy has the right to try to reclaim an important piece from its heritage. cultural.

The European Court of Human Rights concluded that efforts initiated years ago by Italy to recover the “Victorious Youth” sculpture were not disproportionate.

The Getty had appealed a ruling by the Italian high court in 2018 that upheld a lower court’s order to confiscate the piece.

“Victorious Youth,” a life-size bronze sculpture made between 300 BC and 100 BC, is one of the most notable pieces in the Getty collection.

An Italian court in Pesaro ordered it seized and returned in 2010, at the height of Italy’s campaign to recover antiquities looted from its territory and sold to museums and private collections around the world.
