After a gala full of music, nudity and political criticism, the Oscars culminated with the most important category of the night: Best Picture, and to present the award, none other than Al Pacino was chosen, who in 1993 won his own statuette for the film Perfume of a Woman.
It seemed that the ceremony would close with a flourish with a star of Pacino’s stature presenting the last Oscar, but no one expected that the actor would omit to show the nominees for Best Picture and directly announce the winner, taking away the suspense and emotion that so much characterizes the awards ceremonies.
“Best Picture”…uh, I have to go to the envelope for that. And I’ll do it. “And do my eyes see Oppenheimer?” said the 83-year-old actor, generating a huge stir on the networks.
Many considered that Pacino had ruined the highlight of the Oscars, in addition to not respecting the work of the people who were in charge of profiling the nominees.
Many other network users celebrated the attitude of Pacino, who with a career that is simply unmatched in the history of cinema, can have this type of rudeness without receiving retaliation.
“Crazy the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer for Best Picture. A legend does whatever he wants”, “Al Pacino basically saying: ‘Let’s get out of this seedy joint, the winner is Oppenheimer.’ The legend can do whatever he wants”, “I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer for Best Picture. “It couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing,” are some of the comments that Al Pacino received for his unique way of closing the 2024 Oscars.
Since the nominees for the Oscars were announced, Oppenheimer emerged as the favorite with 13 nominations. In the end, she managed to take home seven statuettes: Best Film, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Supporting Actor and Best Lead Actor. This award marked the first time that director Christopher Nolan managed to win an Oscar award.
In previous editions, Nolan was nominated for the films Memento, Inception and Dunkirk. It was for these last two that he was considered for the categories of Best Picture and Best Director, but on both occasions he returned empty-handed.
Finally, in 2024 his work has been recognized, taking home the two statuettes that were previously denied to him.
