Azul has yet another recognition and pioneering role in this area to celebrate. The company is the only airline in Latin America to have its climate neutrality plans (that is, to achieve a balance between emissions and absorptions of greenhouse gases – GHG) approved by the SBTi, or Science Based Targets Initiative. Azul’s goal is to be Net Zero by 2045, five years less than what is expected for the aviation sector in the world.

SBTi is a joint initiative of the UN Global Compact and leading scientific institutions, such as WRI (World Resources Institute) and CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), which aims to oversee the goals of companies across the planet through a long and detailed evaluation process carried out by independent experts.

According to Jason Ward, vice president of People, Customers and ESG at Azul, this unprecedented approval for an airline is a source of great pride as it is the result of Azul’s strategy and actions in ESG, which reinforces the importance of current projects and the company’s innovative programs to reduce and offset its direct and indirect CO2 emissions.

“This recognition leaves us with the certainty that we are on the right path to assume the responsibility of not only being the best company in the world, but also the best for the world. We are the first airline in Brazil and Latin America to have the goal of climate neutrality approved by experts from the most important initiative on the subject. And having this endorsement from SBTi is a very important step, because we work to be a reference in climate change management for the sector in Brazil and Latin America”, explains Jason.
