Voice of Baceprot, a heavy metal band made up of three young Muslim women, is redefining what it means to be a woman and a Muslim in the music industry. Originating from Garut, Indonesia, the band has been making waves in the global music scene since its formation in 2014.
Comprised of Firda Marsya Kurnia (vocalist and guitarist), Widi Rahmawati (bassist), and Euis Siti Aisyah (drummer), Voice of Baceprot’s career serves as a powerful testament to the ability of music to transcend cultural and religious boundaries. Their music addresses important topics such as feminism, gender equality, freedom of expression, environmental issues, and criticism of social and religious conservatism.
Despite facing criticism and threats in their community for their music being considered “haram” under Islam, the band has remained steadfast in their commitment to their identity and message. Their music, which combines nu metal and progressive metal influences, challenges stereotypes and pushes boundaries.
Voice of Baceprot gained international recognition after a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing In The Name” went viral on YouTube. They have received support from respected figures in the rock world and have performed at music festivals around the world.
While the band has achieved success internationally, they are mindful of the challenges they still face in their home country. Despite this, they remain dedicated to their music and message of empowerment and social criticism. Voice of Baceprot is determined to continue breaking down barriers and pushing for progress through their music.
