In the last few hours, Carlos Roberto Varas, a priest of the Córdoba clergy, died after a complication in an operation, according to the first information.

From 9 a.m. a wake takes place in the Cathedral Church. At noon a mass will take place and finally his body will be transferred to the crypt of the temple.

From the Archdiocese of Córdoba confirmed that Archbishop Ángel Rossi, his Auxiliary Bishops Ricardo Seirutti, Horacio Álvarez and Alejandro Musolino; and bishops emeritus Carlos Ñáñez, José Rovai and José Arancibia will participate in the last farewell to the renowned priest.

Originally from Luque, department of Río Segundo, Varas served within the clergy of Córdoba since the 1970s and for more than 30 years he was parish priest of the Cathedral Church of Córdoba.

He was also a promoter of different educational initiatives in institutions in the city of Córdoba: San José School, San Roque Private Parish Institute, Nuestra Señora de Fátima Parish Institute, just to name a few.

Carlos Varas’ wake takes place in the Cathedral of Córdoba.

In 2013 his figure gained public significance for a mass he celebrated in the most important temple in the province with the then leaders of the “La Fiel” bar of Club Atlético Talleres and 250 supporters.

At that time, the group had become a foundation that pursued social goals and the eradication of violence in football. “Their presence is legitimate and necessary. “Sport should be a party and have the family as the main protagonist,” Varas had stated on that occasion.

At the end of the celebration, the Talleres members gave the priest a T-shirt from their club and had a brief dialogue.

A year later, Varas was once again at the center of public opinion when he consecrated the baptism of a daughter of a gay marriage. The religious service had the particularity that it was held in the Cathedral and that the baby’s godmother was the former president Cristina Kirchner, who missed the appointment and was represented by another person.

On that occasion Varas tried to downplay the significance of the event and said: “We always baptize and you cannot deny baptism to anyone. “The Church has never denied baptism to anyone who asks for it as it should be asked.” After wandering through several parishes, a meeting with former bishop Carlos Ñáñez would have paved the way.
