concert #59: the last dinner party, hozier @ stadthalle | 12/03/2023

When the opening act stole the show from the main act: “The Last Dinner Party” shone and “Hozier” froze in the Wiener Stadthalle.

It happened relatively spontaneously that I took someone else’s ticket and made a pilgrimage to the Wiener Stadthalle that Sunday evening. and actually the only reason for me to go was the opening act. Yes, I just wanted to see the opening act because I was really into music at the time and I needed a live experience. I didn’t want to see the following artist “Hozier” for reasons.

Anyway, I looked for my seat and waited very excitedly for “the last dinner party“. When the group finally appeared on stage I was simply thrilled: in their flowing hippie robes they performed a modern indie opera for us, clearly had fun making music and singer Abigail Morris demonstrated not only her great singing but also her breathtaking dancing skills proof.

Since the band had only released a few singles at the time, it wasn’t that easy to get involved with the sometimes somewhat unwieldy pieces. The first part of the set took a bit of getting used to. The second part of the set consisted of all of her hits and I was simply moved – this short support show was so rousing and intense and Abigail’s voice was simply incredibly strong.

I constantly had tears in my eyes because I was so grateful to see this band, who meant so much to me at that time, live and then to see it so well on a stage. It had paid off so much to make the journey just for this group. thank you the last dinner party!

and then at some point “hozier“, the main act of the evening, onto the stage. First of all, why I don’t like Hozier: I saw him in Vienna’s Gasometer in 2018 and it was one of the most boring concerts I had ever attended. And that’s exactly why I never wanted to see him again, so I wouldn’t let him steal my time.

But since I’ve already been to the town hall and he was on stage, I thought I’d just try it again. be open and stuff. Maybe his “live show” had changed? Anyway, I wanted to find out. But after just a few songs, that feeling of dislike came back to me. I looked at the stage, saw the beautiful lights and then I saw him, Hozier, who didn’t move an inch. this rigidity drove me crazy. Music usually moves you, so why couldn’t he move? Is he perhaps a person without a soul?

No matter how fast or how slow the songs were, “Hozier” stayed true to being rooted. I was already feeling really sick from boredom, I just wanted to get away but at the same time I was curious about his “hits” at the very end of the set. So we went from one boring song to the next and each time I hoped that something would happen on stage. but nothing happened. nothing happened at all.

Although, there were two situations that were a bit “entertaining”: once upside down trees came down from the ceiling, and that was actually the most exciting thing that happened, and once or several times there was a sea of lights, i.e. the cell phone lights illuminated the concert hall. During these seas of light there were seemingly constant rescue missions. But somehow I found it strange because it seemed staged somehow. There were also rescue missions at other concerts on his tour, and I didn’t fully understand how that could have happened. “Hozier” didn’t invite people to wild pogo dances, quite the opposite.

Anyway: I held out until the end! and: nothing had changed in his appearance. I’ve never been so bored during a concert and I’ve never wanted to escape so badly. Not even the super hit “Take Me to Church” could entertain me in any way, on the contrary. I found everything about “Hozier” terrible and immediately headed home after the last note. So what I had learned: Bored people remain boring, and even nice stage lighting doesn’t help.

I like it:
