Demersal – Demersal

(c) Demersals

Few bands bring such unfiltered raw emotions and comfortable contradictions into their sound as Demersals. The Danish quartet from Odense and Copenhagen has already attracted attention with an album and an EP between screamo, post-hardcore, ambient and black metal discharges. With the latest release they wanted to explore the darkest corners of their own psyche and the collective social consciousness and are aiming for complete explosion. Simple and poignant „Demersal“ named, the northern lights turn completely on the wheel.

“Lys I Natten” was a wonderful choice as a precursor, as it skillfully packs the contradictory emotions of this record into under two minutes and hits wildly. From the ominous, subdued opening to the wild punches to the ethereal, tense moments of post-revelation, it’s all here. Then “Something”, more than twice as long, tries to build up the emotional tension, leaving room for math-like explosions and snappy post metal, but which also loves its long caesuras and the ambient final act. Remaining in melodic, subtle shock for minutes can surprise you – again completely different, again damn good.

No two songs are the same, it feels like there are enough ideas for complete albums everywhere. This also applies to “Det Mindste Ingenting”, whose repeated explosions cause pain, but which also hints at a subtle touch of riff violence and breaks off in the final act before it becomes too anthemic. “Androide Identiteter” is already a few doors down and works for half an eternity towards the precise neck blow that repeatedly tries to shock with manic pressure waves, effect-laden guitars and dark caesuras. Demersal are rehearsing rebellion against an unspecified entity, although the departure even suggests something conciliatory.

The almost constant contradiction of this album, accompanied by powerful depth and the concentrated exploration of decidedly depressing corners, is quite depressing. Of course, Demersal don’t make it easy for themselves and their audience, that would be even nicer. The ride on the powder keg shines with rare moments of washed-out hope, but it is much more courageous. On the second album, the Danes venture into complex shallows, dismantle everything that stands in their way, play with math and various types of rough post music, but also have a heart for beautiful sound and thoughtfulness. Once chewed and spit out, please: Demersal are consolidating at a damn strong level.
