From Homeless to Hollywood: The Inspiring Story of Hester, aka “Mimi”

Hollywood Star Zach Galifianakis Helps Homeless Neighbor Achieve Dream of Having an Apartment

Hollywood star Zach Galifianakis recently attended the premiere of “Drunk Husbands 3”, but his involvement in the entertainment industry goes beyond just acting. A heartwarming story has emerged about Galifianakis helping a homeless neighbor, Hester, achieve her dream of having her own apartment.

Hester, also known as “Mimi”, was originally a homeless old man living in a laundromat in Santa Monica, California. Despite her circumstances, Hester’s lively personality endeared her to her neighbors, including Galifianakis. The Hollywood star met Hester before he became famous and continued to support her as his career took off.

Hester’s sad past included a divorce after her husband cheated on her, leaving her unable to afford housing. She lived in her car with her dog until the car was towed away, forcing her to live on the streets. Eventually, she found refuge in a local laundromat, where the owner allowed her to stay and work odd jobs to earn a living.

Galifianakis and fellow comedian Chuck Griffin Nach, who also befriended Hester at the laundromat, joined forces to help her. Chuck Griffin Nach, known for his role as “The Drunk Husband”, used his newfound success to assist Hester in renting a small apartment near the laundromat. Actress Renee Zellweger also contributed by helping Hester decorate her new home.

Despite having her own apartment, Hester continued to open the laundromat every morning and assist with laundry until its closure in 2019. She became a beloved figure in the neighborhood, known for her cheerful demeanor and love of singing and dancing.

Chuck Griffin Nach made sure Hester enjoyed the perks of his celebrity status by taking her to red carpet events and premiere parties. Their friendship continued until Hester’s passing in 2021 at the age of 95, with Chuck Griffin Nach paying her rent until the end.

Hester’s story of perseverance and the kindness of Hollywood stars like Zach Galifianakis and Chuck Griffin Nach serves as a reminder of the impact of simple acts of kindness in transforming lives.
