Aztlan
(Melodic Death Metal | Folk | Symphonic Metal)

Label: DIY
Format: (LP)

Release: 17.11.2023

With CABRAKÄAN, now made up of Mexican, Colombian and Australian musicians who operate from Mexico and Canada, Mexican ancestors and their deities have a voice – loud, colorful, longing, passionate and always moving.

Metal with folk elements and a love of opera and from Mexico too? “There is no such thing as impossible” is probably the motto of the duo Patrizia Cuikäni and Marko Cipäktli, who are behind CABRAKAÄN and share the love and passion for the aforementioned musical genres, but also for the indigenous language and their own family roots. The latter go back, on the one hand, to the Mesoamerican and, on the other hand, to the Spanish culture of the repressive conquerors. This all definitely sounds exciting on paper, but what can we expect from the new album “Atzlán”?

It turned out to be a successful melange of the ingredients listed. The roots lie in melodic death metal, which often looks towards Scandinavia, complete with harsh vocals, crisp beats and razor-sharp riffs, but through the keys, tasteful orchestration and the operatic vocals of front lady Patrizia, which are partly in Spanish, partly in Náhuatl ( one of the 62 Mexican national languages), one is also reminded of gothic/symphonic groups like NIGHTWISH and Co. The whole thing is rounded off by a string ensemble, which is skilfully staged, as well as folkloric instruments such as flute, organ, percussion and so-called sound artifacts, which were rediscovered, recreated and personally recorded for this album by researcher Augustin Garcia Reyes.

See also  The TV series "Our Days" starts with Li Xiaoran and Li Naiwen, and Zhou Qi is still led by Zhou Qi.

This results in interesting, varied and intense sound experiences between different genres, which are produced and performed a little rougher than you would expect from the mix, but the unique mix of genres works and invites you to discover them. CABRAKAÄN thus impressively show that folk doesn’t necessarily have to have anything to do with the Middle Ages, fantasy and Vikings. An exciting band to keep an eye on!

PS: If the language barrier seems too inaccessible for you, the band has added three of the tracks in an English version.
