Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized After 2020 Rape Conviction Overturned
Madrid, Spain – Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, 72, was hospitalized after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned last week. He was returned to New York City’s Rikers Island jail following the New York Court of Appeals ruling that he did not receive a fair trial.
Upon his arrival in New York, Weinstein was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for medical evaluation. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated that Weinstein “looks like he needs a lot of physical help” and is undergoing various tests. Aidala insisted that Weinstein’s health issues are physical and not mental, emphasizing that his client is mentally sharp.
The lawyer also criticized prison officials for allegedly mistreating Weinstein during his transition back to Rikers Island. Aidala claimed that they denied him basic necessities such as water, food, and bathroom breaks, despite his poor health as a 72-year-old man battling heart, eye, diabetes, and sleep apnea issues.
Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual attacks against aspiring actress Jessica Mann and production assistant Mimi Haleyi. In addition, he received another 16 years behind bars after his conviction in Los Angeles in 2022.
The court’s decision to overturn Weinstein’s conviction was based on the judge allowing jurors to see and hear evidence unrelated to the charges he faced. As a result, his 23-year prison sentence was reversed, and a new trial was ordered.
Prosecutors have announced their intention to retry Weinstein on charges involving a sex act with a production assistant in 2006 and the rape of an aspiring actress in 2013. Despite the appeal ruling, Weinstein remains in custody due to his conviction in Los Angeles and the 16-year prison sentence he received there.
Weinstein’s legal battles continue as he faces the possibility of a new trial while dealing with ongoing health concerns.
