In October 2019, the Canadian melodic rockers HONEYMOON SUITE made something of themselves heard again with the song “Tell Me What You Want” and a new video. The band, which was founded in Ontario, Canada in 1981, became rather quiet after their last album (“Clifton Hill”) in 2008. An EP called “Hands Up” followed in 2017 and a few appearances at various festivals, but it wasn’t really spectacular and didn’t stay in the fans’ minds for long. After the release of the new number, it would take almost another five years until a complete album was released.
With “Alive” the long-awaited long record is now released. Even though it is highly praised by many others, after a few playthroughs I realize that these are not the same HONEYMOON SUITE that I remember. The fact that there are three original members, Johnnie Dee, Derry Graham and Dave Betts, doesn’t change my opinion.
The songs are all well produced and have their moments, but none of them really get going. It all seems too soft and poppy. I like the title track best, which is very reminiscent of ASIA or “Give It All”, as it is a bit more rocky. Others (“Not Afraid To Fall”, “Broken”) have the potential to end up in the preliminary round of the ESC and not progress there. There was also no emphasis on beautiful guitar solos, which are common in AOR and melodic rock. This is also reflected in the running time of the only songs. A single song exceeds the four minute limit, five out of ten numbers don’t even reach the three minute limit. Actually, “Tell Me What You Want” wasn’t really a big hit, but this song is still one of the rockier ones on “Alive”
Of course I didn’t expect another album like “The Big Prize”, but a little more rock and playfulness or the odd surprise would have been nice.
