King Charles III of the United Kingdom Diagnosed with Cancer
Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles III has been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer and has already begun treatment. The 75-year-old monarch will be temporarily suspending his official duties to focus on his health.
The statement released by the palace did not disclose the type or stage of cancer that King Charles is facing. It also did not provide a specific date for his return to official duties, leaving many wondering about the medical prognosis for the king.
The announcement comes shortly after King Charles and his daughter-in-law, Kate, were both discharged from a private London clinic following medical procedures. King Charles underwent a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate, while Kate, Princess of Wales, underwent unspecified abdominal surgery on January 17.
The palace stated, “His Majesty has begun a regular treatment program today, which is why doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties while they last.” Additionally, the statement highlighted that the king chose to share his diagnosis with the public to avoid speculation about his condition and to “help public understanding for those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
As for Kate, she is still in the process of recovery and is not expected to return to her official duties before Easter. Meanwhile, her husband, William, Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, will return to royal duties on Wednesday, where he is set to attend a gala dinner to benefit the London Air Ambulance Service.
King Charles III ascended the throne in September 2022 after the passing of his mother, Elizabeth II. The announcement of his cancer diagnosis has sparked concern and well-wishes from the public.
