Mainland Actor Hu Ge Stars in “Flowers” Directed by Wong Kar-wai: Mysterious Character “Mr. A” Raises Questions

Mysterious Actor in Hu Ge’s New Drama “Flowers” Sparks Controversy On Weibo

The new drama “Flowers” starring mainland actor Hu Ge and directed by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai has been the talk of the town since its premiere, with one mysterious character in particular sparking controversy and intrigue on social media platform Weibo.

The 30-episode drama, adapted from Jin Yucheng’s novel of the same name, is set in 1990s Shanghai and follows the story of “Abao,” played by Hu Ge, who starts as a stock speculator and rises to become a big boss. However, it is the mysterious character “Mr. A” in the play that has captivated the audience’s curiosity the most, as the character is a stand-in for Hu Ge’s character and is shrouded in mystery, never appearing in front of the camera.

Of particular interest to the audience is “Mr. A’s” relationship with “Li Li,” played by actress Xin Zhilei, and a dramatic scene of jumping into the sea at the end. Speculation has arisen that “Mr. A” looks similar to the male protagonist and is even suspected to be played by Hu Ge himself.

The mystery took an unexpected turn when actor Wang Quan posted on Weibo claiming to be the actor behind “Mr. A.” However, his account was suddenly cleared due to spoilers and he was suspected of being blocked by the platform.

The post, which included a photo of Wang Quan with Xin Zhilei, triggered a large number of reposts on the internet before his account mysteriously disappeared, leading to speculation that he had been banned.

An entertainment blogger broke the news that “the actor who plays Mr. A seems to have been banned,” sparking further discussions about whether the existence of Mr. A is a deliberate suspense-building tactic by director Wong Kar-wai, and whether the actor’s actions have disrupted the planned secrecy surrounding the character.

As the controversy unfolds, it seems that the audience will have to wait until the series is broadcast to finally uncover the truth behind the enigmatic “Mr. A.”
