MOTOROWL
This House Has No Center
(Classic Rock)

Label: Supreme Chaos Records
Format: (LP)

Release: 16.02.2024

“This House Has No Center” deals with the mind game of a person who, in search of the ultimate truth, realizes that the truth can never be understood without perspective. Lyrically, it is a house without a center, a room without an end.

The motorized owl is finally back! Classic/Doom rockers MOTOROWL from Germany, who were founded exactly ten years ago, actually got off to a dream start with “Om Generator” in 2016. The critically acclaimed album immediately went on a big tour in support of the big names in the scene and was also a welcome guest at festivals, before they quickly followed up with “Atlas” in 2018. Since then things have become a bit quieter around the band. The gentlemen from Thuringia weren’t completely lazy, however, as they recorded over two hours of demo material in 2021/2022 and released the 7″ single “Shapeshift Hooligans” including the RUSH cover “Limelight”.

Now album #3 is finally available with the resounding title “This House Has No Center”. And the wait was definitely worth it, because MOTOROWL manage to combine their well-known trademarks with new ideas and more mature songwriting. They offer a musical journey through time and space.

Intense (doom) rock hymns meet the virtuosity of the 70s, but all in a timely, if not timeless, powerful sound. In addition to DEEP PURPLE-like organ and intense, dark riffs, the variable vocal performance of singer and guitarist Max Hemann is also immediately noticeable. He usually seems to come from the background in the production, but with a lot of variety he always manages to be the icing on the cake on the sometimes complex, sometimes introductory tracks. At the latest in the haunting “Clean Passage” there are almost growled vocals that – like the song itself – are strongly reminiscent of MASTODON.

But even if you can always recognize or at least guess influences, MOTOROWL have expanded and refined their already independent, creative sound. So with “All Bells Ring” there is a song that combines retro and modern. Driving beats, rocking riffs, catchy vocals and retro-futuristic synths create a dense atmosphere. The hit “Lie To The Creator” and “Fences”, with its cool drum work, are quicker with dreamy vocals and the crackling of a campfire, as the solemn, semi-clean riffs give you goosebumps. In addition, the quasi-title track “No Center”, which has already been released as a single, takes you on a doomy journey and impresses with its LED ZEPPELIN structure, skilful use of the organ and incredible intensity. Play tip!

MOTOROWL deliver an exciting and varied album. No two songs are the same, they combine genres, venture beyond boundaries and offer both instant rock hits and epic, progressive soundscapes that want to be discovered. Despite the retro, proto, classic rock label, “This House Has No Center” is a surprisingly modern genre piece and a small masterpiece with a thoughtful concept.
