Title: New National-Style Drama “British Island on a Small Island” Explores Classic Folktale with a Feminine Perspective

Beijing, July 11 – A new national-style drama titled “British Island on a Small Island” is set to captivate audiences with a unique blend of love, comedy, island style, and a female perspective. Based on the Chinese folktale “Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai”, the play takes a fresh approach to deconstructing the classics and offers a modern interpretation.

The play is the brainchild of Wu Yue, a renowned actor from the National Theater of China, who chose to venture into the literary and artistic realm by establishing the Xiaoyou Theater Troupe. Wu Yue aims to create a platform for young dramatists with stage dreams, reflecting his own philosophy towards life. Over the years, Wu Yue has received immense appreciation for his performances in various dramas, such as “The Mansion Gate” and “Live Broadcasting the Founding Ceremony”.

Teaming up with Wu Yue is young director Zhang Xiao, who garnered attention for his play “Jizhou Suspicious Clouds”, adapted from “Water Margin”. Zhang’s love for classical literature and traditional culture led to the creation of “British Island on a Small Island”. The play seeks to connect with contemporary audiences by modernizing the characters and dialogues, providing a reflection of the creator’s outlook on life and values.

Zhang Xiao highlights the significance of deconstructing the classic tale, stating, “‘Liang Zhu’ embodies people’s longing for beauty, love, and freedom. By modernizing it, we aim to discover national cultural confidence and align it with contemporary concepts and thinking.” To make the play more immersive and visually appealing, the director incorporates elements like beaches, rocks, envelopes, helmets, motorcycles, and real seascape materials for sound effects and multimedia.

Lead actor Zhang Ruochen, who plays the role of Shanbo, adds interactive and comedic elements to the play. His portrayal of an “outsider of the island” invites the audience into a romantic dream journey. Young actors Liang Chuozi and Fu Yushu will play the roles of Yingtai, bringing a fresh perspective to the character. Unlike the boudoir lady in the original story, Yingtai is depicted as a straightforward, curious girl who yearns for freedom.

The first round of performances for “British Island on a Small Island” will take place at the Chinese Pioneer Wisdom Theater from July 14th to 23rd. The play promises to engage audiences with its innovative approach to classic literature, exploring women’s dilemmas and struggles in love, career, and family.

As theater enthusiasts eagerly await the premiere, “British Island on a Small Island” is set to offer a thought-provoking experience that celebrates the power of storytelling and the spirit of artistic expression.
