Willie Nelson returns the favor to Orville Peck for his serenade at his impressive 90s birthday party with a joint cover version of the Ned Sublette song Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other.
An interpretation of Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other Willie Nelson had already recorded on his own before, now he gets to work with Peck (before The Border respectively Stampede) as an additional scope: “As an artist who has sometimes felt excluded from the Country music industry, once Willie Nelson wants to work with you, there’s really nothing the country world can say after that“ says Peck and meets the icon at eye level, appreciatively: “With all the rhetoric surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community these days, it is so encouraging to have real allies like Willie that aren’t afraid to stand proudly next to us.“

Musically, the version of the song, on the other hand, is relatively harmless, more sensitive than satirical, chimes gently with relaxed siesta strings and gentle percussion, has a restrained piano swaying and later a bit of harmonica use along with a slide guitar through which is really very tastefully restrained arranged number in which a somewhat smokier-than-usual-sounding Nelson harmonizes harmoniously but not very excitingly: really pleasantly relaxed, sophisticated Contemporary Nashville Country!
