PORT-AU-PRINCE (AP) — The governor of Puerto Rico declared a state of emergency after torrential rains, floods and landslides on the island. One person is reported missing.
Governor Pedro Pierluisi also activated the National Guard on Wednesday to help 22 of the 78 municipalities on the island most affected by the incessant rains.
More than 25 centimeters (10 inches) were reported in two days in the interior of Puerto Rico, where some streets were practically converted into rivers.
Police issued a statement Thursday reporting that numerous rivers have overflowed and several roads are impassable. It added that an unidentified man was swept away by a river in the northwestern town of San Sebastián, where several people were trapped by rising waters and waited on the roof of a house before being rescued.
The floods have also destroyed crops on the island.
