When you enter Satchmo, you immediately feel a little special. The beautiful stately building on the Rokin, the friendly staff who will accept your coat: we are going to be pampered tonight! The restaurant is divided into different rooms that feel nice and intimate. And the deep dark colors, golden tones, and velvet upholstery contribute to that luxurious and exclusive atmosphere. Perfect for a special date, but also for an evening with friends. And there is even a private dining room for larger groups. We start this evening with a cocktail at the beautiful Onyx bar and see what Satchmo has in store for us this evening.

Vegan oyster prepared on site
We sit down at the table and start with a number of special snacks and starters that we share together. To start: incredibly delicious Irish premium oysters. Satchmo buys these from an oyster farmer with their own bay, and they taste full, creamy and with a slightly sweet aftertaste. I love pure oysters, but the yuzu cucumber dressing that you get with it is also really delicious. Do you prefer to eat vegan? Then definitely try Satchmo’s vegan oysters! These are assembled at your table: an empty oyster shell is built step by step with, among other things, oyster leaf, salted avocado cream and nori caviar. A delicious, salty snack where you can really taste the sea!

Travel to a Spanish Champagneria in one bite
We also taste two snacks on Japanese milk bread: Iberico ham with chili tomato jam, which takes you to a Champagneria in Spain in one bite. And tartare of king crab and shrimp with smoked sesame, which is reminiscent of the shrimp toast in a dim sum restaurant. Everything is perfectly balanced and goes well with the glass of sparkly rosé that we drink with it.

We continue our culinary journey at Satchmo with two tartare dishes. In terms of taste, the Yellowfin tuna tartare is our favorite. Nice and fresh because of the pieces of nashi pear, and with a dressing with an Asian twist, really delicious. If you fancy a little spectacle at your table, then definitely go for the steak tartare! This is still nice and coarse, is prepared classically, with a little bit of anchovies mixed in. The dish is finished at the table by grilling the bone marrow on the spot and adding it to the steak tartare. It immediately starts to smell wonderful and makes the steak tartare wonderfully moist!

Wow, we are already very impressed with Satchmo’s dishes! And that only increases during the evening. We eat two more main courses: and again part of the preparation takes place at our table. We eat sea bass, in a deliciously spicy and creamy sauce, with fried capers. This is so delicious that we can’t resist eating almost all the sauce, even though the fish is already gone. And we eat Black Cod: sandfish, marinated in char siu and then grilled. This is lacquered again at our table with char siu, and then grilled again. The taste is fantastic: full, the fish almost melts in our mouth! And even the side dish is really worth mentioning: grilled bimi with a fantastic sauce and smoked almonds.

Closed Curtain Cocktail Club
Finally, we eat a perfectly executed New York Cheesecake with raspberries and a scoop of ice cream. We are very satisfied and go home, but nice to know: during the weekend there is a DJ at Satchmo and there is a more clubby atmosphere later in the evening, so be sure to stay a little longer for a drink and even a do you dance! And also worth mentioning: the Closed Curtain Cocktail Club. From Thursday to Sunday you can drink even more exclusive cocktails at Satchmo. Especially for anyone who wants to have a drink, but in a quieter vibe without dancing. We will definitely give it a try!
Satchmo Amsterdam has spoiled us again with delicious, special dishes and innovative flavor combinations. Together with the attentive staff and the nice atmosphere, this really made for a wonderful evening.
