Spielberg opposes 7 Oscar nominations for ‘West Side Story’

Previously, the Academy announced a change to the 94th Academy Awards that caused huge controversy: 8 of the 23 awards (Best Documentary Short, Editing, Makeup/Hair, Original Music, Art Direction, Animated Short, Live Action Short, sound effects) will not be broadcast live, but will be pre-recorded and edited during the broadcast.

To this end, veteran mixer Tom Fleischman resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the sponsor of the Oscars. Fleischman has worked with Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee and others for a long time. He won an Oscar for “Hugo”, and also created “Silence of the Lambs”, “Goodfellas”, “The Irishman” and “The Departed”. “The Aviator”, “Do What You Should”, “Kuroshio”, “BlacKkKlansman”, “Iron Fist Man” and other remixes.

Now, well-known director Steven Spielberg has also voiced his concerns and disappointments. “West Side Story” directed by him has been nominated for seven Oscars this year, and two of them will be affected by the recording and broadcasting.

Spielberg said: “I disagree with this decision made by the Academy Board. I can feel strongly that the Oscars are perhaps the most collaborative medium in the world. Everyone makes movies together and becomes one family. , any technology is as indispensable as any other.”

“I think on the Oscars stage, no one is superior, no one is inferior, everyone is on the same level, leading the best team and telling the best story possible. That means to me – we all deserve a place at the dinner table at 5.”

“Looking back, I think Jaws would have been dentures without John Williams. In West Side Story, when Tony and Maria sang “Tonight,” without art director Adam Stockhausen, Tony singing on the stairs, and Maria on the scaffolding, all of which can only happen in an empty soundstage. Without a film editor, all my films would just stay in sample state.”

“We’re all doing miracles together like this, so I’m also sad that we can’t watch the miracle happen together on live TV. Everyone deserves their moments. All winners’ acceptance speeches should Say it on the spot, but the truth is we can’t do it anymore.”
