In a recent interview, Headland discussed her decision to bring on a screenwriter who had never seen Star Wars before, in an effort to offer a fresh and unique perspective to the writing staff.
“I just thought someone who had never seen Star Wars before she came on board would have a great perspective,” Headland explained. “I wanted those emotional beats to be understood and examined by people who were less familiar with it.”
The screenwriter, after watching the original trilogy over Christmas, texted Headland in shock, exclaiming, “Luke and Leia are brother and sister!? WTF!?” Despite the need for the writing staff to educate themselves on the Star Wars universe, Headland expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with someone who could challenge the narrative.
However, the show has faced backlash from fans for deviating from the original work and introducing politically correct elements, such as a black heroine and LGBTQ+ representation. The trailer for the show is currently the most disliked video on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, with 217,000 dislikes compared to 144,000 likes.
Despite the criticism, Headland remains committed to her vision for the series and the importance of bringing new perspectives to the beloved franchise. It remains to be seen how fans will react when the show debuts.
