“If we were not forced to choose, we would be immortal” wrote Paolo Maurensig in the novel that made him famous, The Luneburg variant (Adelphi), probably the most beautiful who has left us and who will leave us. The season of choices for him is in fact over: the Ansa news agency announced his death at the age of 78 at the Udine hospital where he had been hospitalized for a few days.

Born in Gorizia in 1943, Maurensig, who had completed classical studies, began working in the field of publishing in Milan and at the same time cultivated his passion for writing, publishing some short story books (The wise flowers, Under the banner of the Swan, Ippocampo). The Luneburg variant it came out in 1993 with Adelphi. The novel, which tells of a match between two chess masters through the historical events of the Second World War, has been translated into numerous languages, selling 300,000 copies in Italy alone. A theatrical transposition made its debut in 2007 in Gorizia with the voice of Milva. In 1996 Maurensig’s success was confirmed with the novel ‘Reverse canon‘(Mondadori), which has sold around 200,000 copies in Italy and from which the eponymous film by Ricky Tognazzi was based. With Mondadori Maurensig he then published The shadow and the sundial (1998), The scarlet man (2001), The guardian of dreams (2003), Flemish lovers (2008), Golf and the art of orienting oneself with the nose” (2012). My loves and other animals (2014) came out with Giunti while The devil in the drawer (2018) is the first novel published for Einaudi, followed by The game of the gods (2019) e Pimpernel.
