Unveiling the Truth: When Luis Miguel Revealed He Was Not Born in Mexico

The day Luis Miguel revealed that he was not born in Mexico

The singer, Luis Miguel, began his artistic career claiming that he was originally from Veracruz, Mexico, however, in his youth it was revealed that he was actually born in Puerto Rico.

As shown in ‘Luis Miguel: the series’ released in 2018, it was his own father, Luisito Rey, who orchestrated the revelation as an act of revenge after his son decided to dispense with him as his manager.

In a turn of events, the singer’s father leaked Luis Miguel’s actual birth certificate, which showed that he was born in Puerto Rico and not Veracruz, as previously claimed.

The series also paints an intriguing portrait of the motives behind this manipulation of Luis Miguel’s identity. As shown, Luisito Rey had the ambition to launch his son into stardom and promoted him as a Mexican singer to win the public’s favor.

Although Luis Miguel was born in Puerto Rico during the time his parents lived there, he grew up in Mexico from a very young age and always considered himself Mexican, following his father’s advice.

The truth came to light in 1992 when some reporters discovered discrepancies between the dates of the family’s arrival in Mexico and the year of Luis Miguel’s birth. This investigation led to requesting the singer’s birth certificate from the Puerto Rico Demographic Registry, where it was confirmed that he was actually Puerto Rican, as they suspected.

The news spread quickly, leaving many of her fans feeling betrayed by the apparent lie maintained for years.

Luis Miguel’s reaction to the revelation was to confront it head on. He admitted his true origin to the media and announced his intention to begin the process of becoming a Mexican naturalizer. As a way to divert the topic and reconnect with his audience, he released a new bolero album that reaffirmed his love for Mexico and its culture.
