A path, a journey, a political, social and cultural investigation. Vinicio Capossela, one of the first interviewees of the documentary, entrusts the song Bella ciao a magical and extraordinary definition: «Song that clicks like a lifesaver». Now the movie about the resistance and the story of this song. The documentary Beautiful hello – For freedom, directed by Giulia G Japanese, after premieres at Bif & st and Bergamo Film Meeting, arrives in the hall as a three-day event, on 11, 12 and 13 April. The film reflects on many aspects of the well-known and popular song, from its origin to today, spanning generations and nations. The thesis of the documentary is that Bella Ciao both a kind of lifesaver that over time, keeping itself equal to itself, has adapted to the history of a people, of a struggle, of a resistance. «The idea behind the film – says the director – arises from the need to re-establish the biographical path of Bella Ciao in light of its becoming an international song. A need that becomes more urgent in this historical moment of transition, where the Memory of the Second World War – told by the voice of those who lived through the Nazi-Fascist occupation – gives way to History, understood as a story of the past through documentary sources ” .
The use of the anthem in a neo-Nazi key
An interesting documentary for storytelling, research, combination of interviews and archival materials and for a sense of civility and freedom. A hymn that over time has been used by many peoples, becoming a symbol of all those who resist any type of fascism. But Bella Ciao is so popular that in Ukraine it was unduly reworked by neo-Nazi singer Khrystyna Solovyy. Here is what the text says: «Early one morning, without warning. The earth began to shake and the blood made us boil. Missiles coming down, endless tanks. The old Dnieper River roared in anger. Missiles coming down, endless tanks. The old Dnieper River roared in anger. Nobody thought it, nobody expected it. What could have been the real anger of the Ukrainian people. The enemies accursed without mercy we destroy them ».
