Premier League clubs West Ham and Brentford bowed out of the FA Cup on Tuesday and fifth division Eastleigh’s dream of hosting giant Manchester United in the fourth round was extinguished.
In one of the five third-round matches that were decided by a second game, West Ham lost 1-0 at Bristol City in the second division. The goal was scored by Tommy Conway in the third minute after a defensive error by Konstantinos Mavropanos. David Moyes’ team finished with 10 men after Said Benrahma was sent off at the beginning of the second half for kicking an opponent.
Brentford succumbed 3-2 after extra time against Wolverhampton in a duel of Premier teams at the Molineux stadium. Brazilian attacker Matheus Cunha scored the winning goal for Wolves by converting a penalty in stoppage time in the first half of extra time after a 2-2 draw in the 90 minutes of regulation.
The Wolves will meet their backyard rival West Bromwich Albion in the next round.
Luton was the other Premier team in action and came back to win 2-1 at third division Bolton. Tahith Chong and Chiedozie Ogbene scored for Luton.
Eastleigh, eleventh in the National League, was looking to have a lucrative date with United and one of the most unequal matches in the history of the competition.
However, the 3-1 home defeat against Newport County decreed that the Welsh fourth division team will face Erik ten Hag’s team on January 28. Newport, 17th in League Two, lost to Tottenham in the fourth round in 2018 and Manchester City in the fifth in 2019.
