The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organizer of the Academy Awards, announced that American actor Will Smith, who slapped the emcee earlier at the Academy Awards, will not be able to attend any of the Academy’s Academy Awards and other events for the next 10 years. All ceremonies.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement that this year’s ceremony was overshadowed by Smith’s on-stage behavior, describing his behavior as “unacceptable” and hurtful.
Smith earlier slapped her on stage after emcee Chris Rock made a joke about his wife Jada Smith’s hair loss, sparking a discussion.
He had earlier apologized for the incident and withdrew from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The decision came after executives at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reportedly held a video conference on Friday (April 8) to discuss Smith’s punishment.
The statement added that banning Smith from the awards ceremony is expected to protect the safety of performers while “restoring confidence in the Academy.”
After Smith slapped Locke, the Academy awarded Smith the Best Actor Award as originally planned, but was criticized for ignoring Smith’s violent behavior.
A statement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences apologized for the lack of timely action and thanked Locke for remaining graceful in this “extraordinary situation” after being slapped.
Smith’s withdrawal from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences means he will not be able to vote on future award winners.
Only four people have dropped out of the academy in the past, including Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Adam Kimmel, who dropped out over the sexual assault scandal.
Separately, actor Carmine Caridi allegedly sent a confidential preview of a film to a friend, which resulted in the film leaking. He was eventually expelled from the academy.
There has also been discussion about whether the Academy should withdraw the Best Actor award given to Smith. The Academy has only retracted one award in the past, the 1967 documentary “Young Americans,” which originally won Best Documentary, but the Academy later discovered that it was in fact ineligible and withdrew the award.
Several US studios have announced that they will suspend filming with Smith over the slap, including Sony and Netflix.
