Sicilian Region Launches “Basta Pensarci” Campaign for Hepatitis C Screening
In the city of Messina, approximately 20,000 Sicilians are unknowingly affected by hepatitis C, with hospitals in the area already managing a significant number of cases. To address this issue, the Sicilian Region has initiated the “Basta Pensarci” campaign, offering free screening in all affiliated public and private laboratories.
The goal of the campaign is to diagnose the “silent” disease early and provide rapid treatment with pills. With a network of 320 analysis laboratories, 680 sampling points, 4,200 general practitioners, 640 occupational doctors, over 1,600 pharmacies and 5,000 pharmacists involved, the campaign aims to reach as many people as possible.
To shed light on the campaign and the situation of hepatitis C in Messina, an interview was conducted with infectious disease specialist Antonio Albanese, the medical director of the infectious diseases department at Papardo Hospital.
Dr. Albanese highlighted the importance of the campaign in raising awareness about hepatitis C and the need for early detection and treatment. He emphasized the effectiveness of the screening campaign and the role of general practitioners in referring patients for timely diagnosis and care.
Screening for hepatitis C can be done at all analysis laboratory centers, as listed on the Region’s website. In case of a positive result, further tests are required to confirm the infection and determine the appropriate treatment plan. The good news is that there are now treatments available that can lead to recovery in just a few weeks, with a success rate of 99%.
In terms of prevention, Dr. Albanese recommended avoiding contact with unknown blood, practicing safe sex, and not sharing needles for drug use. He advised individuals in Messina to undergo screening if they suspect contact with hepatitis C patients and assured them of the support and guidance available.
The “Basta Pensarci” campaign is a crucial initiative in the fight against hepatitis C, with the potential to save lives and improve public health in Sicily. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free screening opportunities and prioritize their health and well-being.
