Arturo Carballo: Mexican Psychiatrist Following in His Father’s Footsteps

Arturo Carballo, a Mexican immigrant whose father hails from Ourense, has chosen a career path that differs from that of his father. Instead of following in his father’s footsteps, Carballo has decided to pursue a career in psychiatry, believing that “mental health is essential for people’s well-being.”

Despite the change in career direction, Carballo has found the transition to be smooth, thanks to his strong ties to his roots. “The roots have brought me back to the origins,” he explains. “My sister and I still have family here and they helped us get settled. We have almost no problem with the language, because we have heard Galician since we were little.”

Within the field of psychiatry, Carballo has a specific focus on studying the treatment of depression through psychedelics. “In Mexico, they are used as a treatment for depression, and I would like to direct my training towards research of that specific field of psychiatry,” he says.

Carballo’s unique career path and dedication to mental health research are sure to make a positive impact in the field of psychiatry.
