A recent study has shed light on the alarming reality faced by many employees in Spain, with more than half reporting poor workplace well-being. The study, conducted by Cigna 360-Vitality, revealed that 31% of employees feel stressed due to an overwhelming workload, leading to a phenomenon known as sisyphemia.

Sisyphemia, also referred to as “worker’s fatigue,” is a condition characterized by physical and mental exhaustion resulting from the constant pursuit of unattainable job expectations. This syndrome is particularly prevalent among individuals with high standards of perfection and self-demand, impacting their health, performance, and motivation.

The consequences of sisyphemia are severe, with experts warning of potential symptoms such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and social isolation. Amira Bueno, Director of Human Resources at Cigna Healthcare, emphasized the need for companies to proactively address this issue and prioritize the well-being of their employees.

To combat sisyphemia, Bueno recommends implementing five key strategies. These include promoting a preventive organizational culture, defining realistic expectations, following the 3 Rs rule (Recognize, Reward, Provide feedback), providing training in time management, and promoting autonomy and flexibility in the workplace.

By taking these proactive measures, companies can create a supportive environment that minimizes the negative effects of sisyphemia, ultimately safeguarding the health and well-being of their workforce. It is essential for organizations to prioritize the mental and physical health of their employees to ensure a productive and sustainable work environment.
