against dengue remediation and prevention

The Italian Ministry of Health is increasing surveillance of dengue virus cases in Italy, in light of the season of increased circulation of the tiger mosquito and the surge of cases in the Americas. The ministry has issued a circular to all Regions urging them to strengthen surveillance of human cases of dengue, enhance environmental remediation actions to reduce mosquito breeding grounds, and prepare local measures for monitoring and combating vectors.

Furthermore, the ministry is recommending staff training on dengue and other arboviruses, updating healthcare personnel on prevention and identification measures. They have also highlighted the need for activities to increase public awareness of dengue risk and encourage active prevention behaviors. Additionally, the ministry is emphasizing the importance of conducting checks on blood donations to prevent the transmission of the virus.

This increased surveillance comes as Brazil recently surpassed 2 million dengue cases in 2024, a historic record according to the Ministry of Health. Brazil has recorded over 2 million cases, with an incidence rate of 990.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The country has seen 682 confirmed deaths and another 1042 under investigation, marking the highest number of cases in over two decades.

With the rise in cases both in Italy and Brazil, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of preventive measures, early detection, and effective vector control to combat the spread of dengue virus.
